Guess I heard you said the only part of stand-up comedy B.D. understood was the standing up part.

EULOGY FOR A COMEDIAN BY DANIEL COSHNEAR 34THPARALLEL MAGAZINE ISSUE 74

I first met B.D. at a club in L.A., 2005. We were all young then; we were all idiots. We’d blow through an hour’s worth of material in 10 minutes. Most of it was garbage, pratfalls, balloon animals, anything we could think of, but still… B.D. knew how to pause, to breathe. He wasn’t afraid of silence... I learned a lot from him. I’d never seen anyone hold the audience in his hands the way B.D. did.

Guess I heard it different.

Don’t know what you heard, Max.

Guess I heard you said the only part of stand-up comedy B.D. understood was the standing up part.

Leo: It could be my thinking has evolved since then.

Could be the opposite.

Nice retort, buddy. You’d be a hit on the school yard. The preschool yard.

Could be you never showed at one of B.D.’s gigs.

Maybe I had my own career to think about. Maybe you should try it.

Could be you never showed at Mercy General when B.D. was in his darkest hours. It could be he asked about you every time I saw him. He worshipped you, Leo, but you—

There’s no shame in being who you are.
